Marshall Bridges took over after a pitching change and promptly allowed the final two home runs, to Joe Adcock and Frank Thomas. Despite the five runs in that inning and a solo home run from Mathews in the eighth, the Braves lost 10-8. The Nationals became the fourth National League team to hit four straight home runs, doing so off of Michael Blazek.
From June 6th to the end of the season, Gennett hit 24 homers for the Reds and slugged a very healthy – and at the time, uncharacteristic — .557 over his final 380 plate appearances. When the final one is an extra-inning blast that breaks a tie and helps your club win. Chuck Klein knew what that’s like, and it was probably lots of fun. Green also doubled and singled, going 6-for-6 and setting a single-game record of 19 total bases. In Game Four of a KBO playoff series, Bears first baseman Jae-il Oh went 4-for-4 with 4 HRs, 4 runs scored, and 9 RBIs to advance to the Korean Series.
Four Home Runs in a Single Game
MLB ConfidentialMLB players weigh in on baseball's best player, PEDs and what they really think about A-Rod's return. The Age Of Mike TroutThe BBTN 100 counts down the top 25 players in baseball for 2015. There have been a number of three-homer games along the way, but nobody has been able to get over the hump for that fourth dinger. What’s crazy about the two that followed was that it appeared as though he hit them off the end of the bat, yet he still muscled them out, which gave him 40 dingers on the year. The final homer, though, was an absolute blast to center field, and Delgado’s bat flip tells us he knew that thing was a moonshot from the second he made contact. Hamilton is now hitting .406 with 14 home runs and 36 RBI in 30 games.
Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock and Frank Thomas homered in 7th inning vs. Reds. Woodie Held, Pedro Ramos, Tito Francona and Larry Brown homered in 6th inning of Game 2 vs. Angels. Seerey belted four homers, going 4-for-6 with seven RBI against the Philadelphia Athletics on July 18, 1948. Delgado was only a two-time All-Star and was vastly underrated during his career. Gennett went 5-for-5 with four homers and 10 RBI on the 73rd anniversary of D-Day — June 6, 2017 — against the Cardinals. One might have a few questions about that mark, so let's get down and dirty with the all-time leaderboards.
Chuck Klein, Philadelphia Phillies
Two years after Lowe's feat,Ed Delahanty of thePhiladelphia Phillies became the second player to hit four home runs in a game. Two other Phillies players have achieved the feat,Chuck Klein in 1932 andMike Schmidt in 1976. Five current franchises – the Braves,Baltimore Orioles,Chicago Cubs,Cincinnati Reds, andOakland Athletics – share the record of having surrendered two four-homer games over their histories. Thirteen of the 30 franchises have achieved at least one four-homer game, and 12 franchises have surrendered at least one. Eleven have never been involved in a four-homer game at all, although only three of these have existences dating to before the 1960s expansion era. Bobby Lowe was the first to hit four home runs in a single game, doing so on May 30, 1894 for the Boston Beaneaters.
According to the Society for American Baseball Research, Oil Cities catcher Jay J. Clarke went 8-8 with eight home runs, a single-game professional record. However, Clarke’s total is still disputed, reported by some newspapers as three homers and eight runs scored, but there is no surviving box score to help confirm or deny his feat. Martinez became the 19th player in major-league history to hit four home runs in a single game. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, solo shots in the seventh and eighth innings, and a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Indians right fielder Rocco D. Colavito became the ninth player in major-league history to hit four home runs in a single game.
MLB's home run records: Where Judge stands all-time
Click here to read a Reno Evening Gazette article about this game. Phillies outfielder Edward J. Delahanty became the second player in major-league history to hit four home runs in a single game. Adcock homered off four pitchers that fateful night at Ebbets Field and even added a double. He finished the game with 18 total bases, which at the time was a Major League record. Of the 11 players eligible for the Hall of Fame who have hit four home runs in a game, five have been elected. Players are eligible for the Hall of Fame if they have played in at least 10 major league seasons, and have either been retired for five seasons or deceased for at least six months.
Carlos Delgado was the only one who hit his four home runs in a game in which he made only four plate appearances. Mike Cameron hit his four on May 2, 2002, and Green matched the total 21 days later on May 23, 2002, the shortest span between such games. Lowe and Seerey each hit fewer than 100 home runs over the length of their career while Willie Mays, with 660, hit more than any other player in this group. Both Mays and Schmidt are also members of the 500 home run club.
Bisons leadoff hitter/left fielder William G. Bottenus went 5-for-5 with 4 home runs, 9 RBIs, and 18 total bases. A classic slugfest in which the Phillies defeated the Cubs, 18-16, featured a historic day from one of the best to play the game. The teams combined for nine homers in the game, including four consecutive long balls by Schmidt. Former Florida State slugger Marshall McDougal holds the NCAA record for most in a single game when he went deep in six consecutive at-bats against Maryland on May 9, 1999.
The D-backs entered the top of the fourth inning at Miller Park trailing 2-0. After a Justin Upton flyout, Adam LaRoche went yard off Dave Bush to bring the D-backs within one run. That was followed by homers from Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew. It was the second time in the 2010 season that Bush had allowed four home runs in a game -- but the first time in a single inning.
No player has accomplished this feat more than once in his career, and no player has ever hit five home runs in one game. Giants center fielder Willie Mays became the 10th player in major-league history to hit four home runs in a game. He went 4-for-5 with 4 home runs and 8 RBI; he missed a chance for a fifth homer when the top of the ninth inning ended with him on deck. Clippers leadoff hitter/center fielder Dick Lane went 6-for-7 with five homers, a single, and 10 RBIs. He hit two home runs in the fourth inning, when the Clippers scored eight runs. Click here to view an Indianapolis Star article about Lane’s feat.
Despite Delahanty's achievement on July 13, 1896, the Phillies lost to theChicago Colts, one of only two occasions when a player hit four home runs but finished on the losing team. The other such occasion took place in 1986, whenBob Horner struck four home runs for the Braves but theMontreal Expos emerged victorious. Following Delahanty's four-home run game in 1896, no other player would accomplish the feat for nearly 36 years, the longest gap between such occurrences. The shortest interval took place in 2002, whenMike Cameron hit his four on May 2, 2002, andShawn Green repeated the feat 21 days later, on May 23.
NCAA.org only began collecting single-game high stats prior to the 2012 season, leaving the exact number of four-home run hitters in Division I history unknown. In the seasons since, however, there have been seven different players to reach the rare milestone. The Indians became the first American League team to hit four straight home runs in the second game of a 1963 doubleheader. After two quick outs, they hit four straight solo home runs off Paul Foytack to extend a 5-1 lead to 9-1. Larry Brown, who hit the final of the four straight home runs, was Foytack’s last batter of the game.
Adcock went 5-for-5 with four homers, a double and seven RBI in a victory against the Brooklyn Dodgers on July 31, 1954. The 2010 American League MVP went 5-for-5 with four homers, a double and eight RBI in a 10-3 victory against the Orioles on May 8, 2012. So, as you can see, what Judge is doing in 2022 is truly historic. Judge will likely get a day off in the season's final day before the Yankees start their World Series chase in the ALDS next week.
